Reproductive Reflexology

Reproductive Reflexology is also known as Fertility Reflexology.

I have been treating couples facing fertility problems with reproductive reflexology and have seen how natural reflexology treatment enhances well being and, with the right lifestyle choices, may help improve the chances of a happy outcome.

Stress and infertility

The term infertility is used when conception has not occurred after 12 months of trying for a baby. You may have had tests which show that there is nothing wrong with either you or your partner and have Fertility Testimonialbeen diagnosed with “unexplained infertility”. You may even have a child already but are finding it much more difficult to fall pregnant this time around. Perhaps you have a known medical condition such as PCOS, or a blocked fallopian tube or scar tissue from Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which may be affecting your chances of conception.

Many different factors affect the ability to conceive, but this is more likely to happen if both you and your partner are in good health. Age does have a bearing on fertility but there are many other factors which could be contributing to the problem.

The stresses and strains of modern life can have a significant impact on health and therefore on fertility too.

You may recognise the following patterns of behaviour in yourself or your partner:

high levels of work-related stress
regular high alcohol intake
“binge” drinking to “let your hair down” or forget about your problem
erratic eating patterns
poor diet and/or ‘convenience’ foods
being over-weight
being under-weight
excessive working hours
work-related travel (especially long-haul)
too much or not enough exercise
smoking

The anxiety over fertility issues can also add significantly to the stress you are under and you may have become trapped in a cycle of expectation and disappointment every month. Many couples have told me that they feel isolated and unable to talk about their problem and feel particularly upset when friends or work colleagues are pregnant or have recently had babies.

There could, however, be steps you can take that may help improve your chances. I believe that regular reflexology treatment sessions and sensible lifestyle choices have played a big part in the positive outcomes I have seen.

Hormonal imbalance
Conditions caused by hormone imbalance may make trying for a baby even more difficult:

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)– for information and support click here
Endometriosis– for information and support click here
Irregular menstrual cycle
Amenorrhoea (sometimes caused by long-term contraceptive pill use)
Anovulation

Reflexology seems to have a very positive effect on balancing hormone levels and feedback from those attending for regular treatment sessions has shown:

regulation of the menstrual cycle
a return of the menstrual cycle (for those with amenorrhoea)
less bloating, irritability and other PMS symptoms
less discomfort for those with dysmenorrhoea (a symptom of Endometriosis)
a more condensed menstrual flow

How reflexology could help you!
Reflexology works in a subtle way on a physical and emotional level and is especially beneficial for those experiencing fertility issues. Perhaps you are feeling anxious and on edge a lot of the time and feel unable to think about anything else but having a baby. The calming and soothing effects of a reflexology treatment will help relieve this stress and tension and could be a crucial first step in “letting go”. I believe you need to allow time to clear emotional blockages and address any lifestyle issues which could also be adding to the problem. Reflexology treatments may also help by

enhancing the body’s own natural healing abilities
encouraging all body systems to function efficiently
assisting the elimination of toxins from the body

Please note that it is important that all aspects of your lifestyle are explored at your initial appointment and plenty of time is allowed to talk this through so that a treatment plan can be devised

Support for your particular journey
Maybe you are undergoing fertility investigations or are about to embark upon an assisted conception programme like IVF. Many couples describe this time as “like being on an emotional roller coaster” but reflexology may help you stay calm and positive through the ups and downs of treatment and support you through each stage of your journey.

You may find treatments particularly beneficial in the time leading up to egg collection and embryo transfer. Treatments encourage relaxation, leading to a reduction in stress hormones, which may improve your chances of success.
