Benefits of Massage During Pregnancy
Studies have indicated that massage during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labour outcomes and newborn health.
Massage aims to relax muscle tension and improve lymphatic and blood circulation through mild pressure applied to the muscle groups of the body. Swedish Massage is the recommended massage method during pregnancy because it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts.
Hormone Regulation
Studies done in the past ten years have shown that hormone levels associated with relaxation and stress have significantly altered when massage therapy is introduced to women’s prenatal care. Consequently, the treatment leads to mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health.
In women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, reduced hormones such as nor-epinephrine and cortisol (hormones associated with stress), and increased levels of dopamine and serotonin levels (low levels of these hormones can coincide with depression).
These changes in hormone levels may lead to fewer complications during birth and fewer instances of newborn complications. The evidence strongly suggests there are maternal and newborn health benefits when a woman incorporates therapeutic massage into regular prenatal care.
Pregnancy Leg Massage to Help Reduce Swelling
Leg massage for pregnant ladies can help with Oedema, or swelling of the joints during pregnancy which is often caused by reduced circulation and increased pressure on the major blood vessels by the heavy uterus. Massage helps to stimulate soft tissues to reduce the collection of fluids in swollen joints. It also improves the removal of tissue waste carried by the body’s lymph system.
Essential as the uterus rests on muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back. The pressure of the uterus spreads tension to the muscles of the upper and lower leg, causing them to swell and put pressure on nearby nerves.
Massage therapy addresses the inflamed nerves by helping to release the tension on nearby muscles. Many women have experienced a significant reduction in sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy through massage.

Is Pre Natal Massage Uncomfortable?
I find the best position for a pregnant woman during massage is side-lying. Other therapists use tables that provide a hole in which the uterus can fit but they may not be reliable and can still apply pressure to the abdomen, or allow it to dangle, causing uncomfortable stretching of the uterine ligaments.
I am aware of how to position you safely during pregnancy massage and prevent strain to the uterine ligaments and will watch for symptoms of blood clots and varicose veins.
What Precautions do I Need To Take For a Pregnancy Massage?
As with any therapeutic approach to pregnancy, wellness is essential. Keep your therapist well informed and work with us in your consultation on every pregnancy massage appointment you attend.

Pregnancy Massages Reviews, Naturally Heaven Therapy in Newcastle upon Tyne
“….my pre-natal massage with Alanna at Heaven Therapy. I always look forward to this as I come away feeling heaps better. Alanna is fully qualified in pre-natal massage and reflexology and has helped me with my sickness and my aches and pains. Afterwards, my body felt a lot better and all the tension had gone.” Kelly
“It’s heavenly!”
“I have been going quite regularly to heaven therapy since November 2012 from when I was four months pregnant to receive pregnancy massages in Newcastle. After suffering badly with SPD in the 1st pregnancy that I had to walk with crutches for the last few months. I had heard that subsequent pregnancies could make the SPD worse! I had read that massage could help, so I booked in with Alanna.”
My husband got me a set of pregnancy treatments with Alanna to ease lower back and hip pain in late pregnancy. The treatments were fantastic and helped with pain and relaxation. So much so, I had more treatments before and after our little one arrived. I couldn’t recommend Alanna highly enough. She is an excellent therapist and a great friend now too.
“Massages helped ease labour and to give birth naturally to a 10lb 6oz baby!”
Alanna is very professional and friendly; she carefully listens to every session of where the aches and pains are excellent at getting those tough knots out. Throughout my pregnancy, I did get pelvic pain, but I did not need crutches to walk about!! It was not as bad as my 1st pregnancy. In my opinion, I owe the fact that I could still get around with minimum pain to the pregnancy massages which made me walk out there feeling weightless.
The fact that I was relaxed and de-stressed from having the massages I feel it helped me have relatively easy labour and to give birth naturally to a 10lbs 6oz baby! The atmosphere at heaven therapy is very welcoming and friendly I recommend that all pregnant ladies even try one massage I guarantee they’ll be back for more! I can’t wait to go back now for some relaxing me-time massage.” Donxdon1980, on Tripadvisor, June 18th, 2013.
